Last month Bailey returned to the University of Nottingham where he graduated with his degree in Civil Engineering, this time as an Alumni. After being approached by the University of Nottingham to volunteer to speak about the industry alongside other Civil Engineering Alumni, he took the opportunity to engage with current students and to highlight his experiences and the opportunities available within consultancies such as PJS.
The “Where are they now?” Event, hosted by the careers team at the University of Nottingham, covered a wide range of topics.
Starting with presentations by alumni, this then opened up into a questions and answers sessions, allowing current students to engage with alumni including a current Director at WSP and CIHT Young Professional of the Year. The director addressed why he chose his degree, a typical day-in-the-life and what drove him to choose to work in the smaller consultancy environment as opposed to working predominantly on large, headline-grabbing infrastructure such as HS2 or Crossrail.

Bailey comments, “It was fantastic to return to the University of Nottingham as an alumni to engage with current students and to share my experiences. It was great to see such a good turnout of students at the event and to see them actively taking part in the discussion.
They took a particular interest in the differences between working for a smaller consultancy such as at PJS compared to large, multinational and multidisciplinary companies and I feel that this is an area of the industry which is usually sorely under-represented at university careers events. To be able to highlight this part of the industry to upcoming graduates was a pleasure and I look forward to continuing to build my relationship with the University as an Alumni to continue to share what I have learnt from my time at PJS.”
